The Safal Group

The Safal Group, established in 1962 with its first manufacturing facility in Mombasa, Kenya, has evolved into Africa’s leading manufacturer of flat and long steel products. Over the past six decades, the group has expanded its operations across Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa, supplying high-quality metal roofing and allied building products to over 40 countries worldwide. With a workforce of more than 3,500 employees, the Safal Group remains committed to innovation, sustainability, and community development, continually investing in modern technology and eco-friendly production methods to meet the diverse needs of the African construction industry.

In 2003, the group’s various operating companies were consolidated under the holding company Safal Investments Mauritius Limited, unifying its diverse operations. The Safal Group’s product portfolio includes cold rolled, galvanized, aluminium-zinc coated, and pre-painted steel coils, all manufactured to international standards in state-of-the-art facilities located in Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa. These materials are transformed into proprietary building products such as sheeting, cladding systems, light steel trusses, and complete steel buildings, all designed and manufactured in Africa to meet world-class performance standards.

A significant milestone in the group’s history was the establishment of Safal Steel in 2008. This subsidiary introduced advanced technologies, including the Zincal® coating—a combination of zinc and aluminum that provides superior corrosion resistance for steel products. Safal Steel’s commitment to innovation and quality has solidified the group’s reputation as a leading player in the African steel manufacturing industry.

Beyond its commercial success, the Safal Group is dedicated to corporate social responsibility. The group has implemented various initiatives focused on healthcare, education, and environmental conservation, aiming to uplift the communities in which it operates. This commitment to social impact underscores the group’s holistic approach to business, ensuring that its growth contributes positively to societal development.

Today, the Safal Group continues to lead the African building solutions industry, driven by its core values of customer focus, excellence, partnerships, ethics, and care for people and the environment. Its vision of constructing an Africa built with pride is reflected in every aspect of its operations, from product innovation to community engagement.

The outputs of more than 30 roof manufacturing operations make it the largest producer of metal roof sheeting in Africa. To complement its roofing brands, specialist products have been developed by the Safal Group – such as fastener products, steel pipes and hollow sections, and other value-added accessories for the building industry.

The Safal Group lays great emphasis on being a socially responsible corporate citizen. Its focus is primarily on the communities in which it operates and particularly those who are most affected by poverty and social disadvantages. The Group also supports innovators who serve as role models for community upliftment.

At all its plants, the Safal Group’s manufacturing processes are designed and managed with sustainability in mind and therein aim to minimize emissions and waste while maximizing energy efficiency.
